Finding the right imaging software to process your hard-won astronomy astrophotographs can be a daunting task.

Very few images captured with a telescope are as high a quality as they could be.  And it can be quite frustrating when you have taken a long series of pictures during your astrophography session, only to end up with images that lack the fine detail you saw through the telescope.

Enter... imaging software.

The atmosphere is not always steady and most telescopes do not track the sky in ultraprecision.  These lead to astrophography images that are not as highly detailed as they should be. Especially during those long exposure shots.

Now you can clean up your images and tease out an amazing amount of detail using image processing software.

Christian Buil's incredible astronomical image processing freeware program named Iris.  Website also contains a whole host of detailed tutorials for using this software as well as links to other users and user groups.  If you haven't ever looked at this software, be sure to do it now!

ASTROSNAP :

Image processing software for webcams.  There are two different versions of this software on their website... AstroSnap Pro (not freeware) and AstroSnap Lite (which is freeware).  * Note:  Click the link below and scroll to the bottom of their webpage to find the freeware version.

The ever popular webcam streaming video image processing freeware!  Powerful, yet easy to use.

DeepSkyStacker :

DeepSkyStacker is a freeware for astrophotographers that simplifies all the pre-processing steps of deep sky pictures.

• Registering

• Stacking

• Simple post-stacking processes to quickly view the final result.

• Saving the resulting image to a TIFF or FITS file (16 or 32 bit)

After a shooting night you give all your pictures (light frames, darks frames, offset/bias frames, flat frames) to DeepSkyStacker and you go to bed. The next morning (or is it afternoon?) you can see the result and start post-processing.
