But first, a quick history lesson…

“What do they mean by “Classic” in the Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Telescope name?”

In the 1960’s, an avid amateur astronomer (and very interesting man) named John Dobson had a burning desire to make his passion of astronomy accessible and available to everyone. But at that time, telescopes were expensive to buy and complex to operate.  In a true flash of absolute genius, John Dobson designed a simplified, yet extremely rigid, mounting system for reflecting telescopes, perfect for visual observations.  This design allowed the telescope to be rotated about its base (azimuth motion) and to be elevated up and down (altitude motion). Watch the video above to see this motion.

This wildly successful design has become a “classic” and is one of the most popular telescope mount designs of all time.  It has been aptly named the “Dobsonian”, in honor of its inventor. Click here to read more about John Dobson.
